2010 Schedule Update:
Latest from the Grapevine is that in 2010 we will see a 20 race schedule...
As far as what has transpired recently - well, TG has failed with another of his promises: "to start with a clean slate for 2009"... only a couple of changes occured and we can expect same for next year...
Even though there are quite a few venues trying to get on the 2010 schedule, and TG would love to get almost all of them, it is realistically impossible to happen except for replacing Richmond with Cleveland and adding Road America... plus accomodating Surfers Paradise (pic above) to be coupled with Motegi on the same trip...
Here's how the scenario for 2010 looks like:
1. April 4 - St.Petersburg, FL - street/airfield course
2. April 18 - Long Beach, CA - street course
3. April 25 - Kansas City, KS - oval track
4. May 23 - Indianapolis, IN - oval track
5. May 30 - Milwaukee, WI - oval track
6. June 5 - Ft.Worth, TX - oval track (Sat nite race)
7. June 20 - Newton, IA - oval track
8. ??? June 27 - Cleveland, OH - airfield course
9. July 4 - Watkins Glen, NY - road course
10. July 11 - Toronto, Canada - street course
11. July 25 - Edmonton, Canada - airfield course
12. ??? July 31 - Sparta, KY - oval track (Sat nite race)
13. August 8 - Lexington, OH - road course
14. August 22 - Sonoma, CA - road course
15. August 28 - Joliet, IL - oval track (Sat nite race)
16. September 5 - Belle Isle, MI - road course
17. ??? September 19 - Elkhart Lake, WI - road course
18. October 16 - Motegi, Japan - oval track (Sat race)
19. ??? October 24 - Surfers Paradise, Australia - street course
20. November 7 - Homestead, FL - oval track
^ Ofcourse, some dates are subject to change...
===================================
Other venues that may be under consideration for 2010:
a/ Monterey, CA - (Laguna Seca) road course
b/ Mexico City, Mexico - road course
c/ Las Vegas, NV - street course or road course
d/ Loudon, NH - oval track
e/ Houston, TX - street course
f/ Portland, OR - road course
g/ Fontana, CA - oval track
h/ Brooklyn, MI - oval track
i/ St.Jovite, Canada - (Mt.Tremblant) road course
j/ Birmingham, AL - (Barber) road course
k/ Racife, Brazil - street course
l/ Monterrey, Mexico - road course
m/ Long Pond, PA - (Pocono) oval track
...the saga shall continue...

The way I see 2010 schedule:
Cleveland needs to be added
Road America needs to be added
Surfers Paradise needs to be added
Mexico City needs to be added
Richmond needs to be ditched
Kentucky needs to be ditched
Homestead needs to be ditched
And after that we'll talk about some more changes. Until ICS becomes CART2 incarnato !! _________________

MILLER: The Perfect IndyCar Schedule
by Robin Miller
There seemed to be a lot more screams of disgust and anger than cheers after the Indy Racing League announced its 2009 schedule last week. Most of the talk concerned the tracks that didn't make the cut.
Longtime open wheel fans and many of the teams were bummed because Cleveland, Elkhart Lake and Phoenix weren't included while one of Bruton Smith's lieutenants was livid that Loudon was omitted and one IndyCar team predicted problems when learning Australia had no date.
But there are reasons only Toronto and Long Beach were added and the series didn't expand to 20-21 races.
First off, this tricky little thing called a contract dictated the majority of the 18-race lineup.
Next year is the final one for the contracts with Kansas, Milwaukee, Texas, Richmond, Watkins Glen, Kentucky, Motegi, Detroit, Iowa, Miami and Mid-Ohio.
The IRL has multi-year deals in place with St. Petersburg, Edmonton, Long Beach, Sonoma, Chicago and Toronto. Oh yeah, and Indy.
So let's be realistic, and maybe a little optimistic, about what this thing could look like in 2010.
On the oval side, Milwaukee is a must because it still requires braking and driving (at least in the race) and it's the last bastion of tradition. The crowd made a little comeback this year despite a ridiculous 3:50 local starting time with no support races.
Even though it's insane racing, Texas is a big-city event and probably draws too many people to get gassed so say goodbye to Kansas City. Iowa and Richmond aren't major markets but they do put 40,000 paying customers in the seats who show up every year and really seem to enjoy the whole experience.
Tony George tried to go back to Phoenix International Raceway in '09 but was only offered an insulting Thursday night before the NASCAR weekend. So until PIR boss Brian Sperber has an attitude adjustment and the IRL gets a reasonable date, Phoenix is on hold.
Loudon, which drew 50,000 in CART's last year in 1995 but only a few thousand in the four years the IRL ran there, remains high on the IRL's list according to Terry Angstadt, vice president of the IRL's commercial division. It's another oval that would be perfect for Indy cars and requires more than full-throttle racing.
As long as Honda is calling the shots, Motegi, Japan will be on the schedule.
It seems like Michigan would be worth trying to jump start, although there's this lame theory there might be too many races within a close proximity. That seems to be the same argument made by those opposed to Cleveland.
But let's get real. Even in its depleted state earlier this decade, Cleveland still out-drew Detroit last year and, with one series, it might be able to get back to 40,000/50,000 on race day. There is no better racing than Burke Lakefront Airport and it #### sure belongs before Belle Isle, which was upgraded by Roger Penske but remains a terrible track for Indy cars.
Also, the majority of open wheel racing's fan base is in the midwest and there were always good crowds at Mid-Ohio/Michigan/Cleveland so embrace your audience.
An ALMS/IRL doubleheader at Elkhart Lake (like Long Beach and Mid-Ohio) is a no-brainer for the promoter, both series and would be a winner with the road racing faithful. Ditto for Cleveland.
Loyalists still hold out hope for Laguna Seca and possibly Portland but Barber Motorsports Park (Birmingham, Ala.) or Miller Motorsports Park (Toole, Utah) could be a possibility down the road and Mexico City is far and away the best road course in North America not being used.
And Las Vegas is the finest street circuit in mothballs.
If Andrew Ranger, James Hincliffe, Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy were still in the mix, Montreal or Mt. Tremblanc could be added and Vancouver was always a big draw. You can't race too much in Canada, they get it and they like it.
In an ideal world, we'd probably have 21 races (eight ovals, seven street circuits and six road courses) because that offers the toughest, most diverse and appealing schedule.
By 2011, a perfect sked would be: Phoenix, Loudon, Milwaukee, Michigan, Iowa, Richmond, Chicago, Indy, Long Beach, St. Pete, Toronto, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Edmonton, Surfer's Paradise, Elkhart Lake, Sonoma, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Portland and Sebring (must be repaved and run as the prelim to Sebring's 12 Hours).
But, since the majority of the IndyCar paddock is a long way from being financially fit until sponsors start coming back, 18 races is about the max. And while ovals are Indy's heritage and still offer the most exciting competition, they're also incredibly expensive in crash damage and much less appealing in this economy. |
So only 7 races are secure for 2010 - does that mean TG will wake up and come up with a right schedule ??? _________________

2010 Schedule Update:
Latest from the Grapevine is that in 2010 we will see a 20 race schedule...
And CLEVELAND (pic above) will be on it !!!... the problem now is that TG wants Clevelend as far as possible from the Mid-Ohio race... maybe it will replace Kansas ??... at the same time there are a bunch of other venues vying for a spot and many venues do not have a deal past 2009...
Here's how the scenario for 2010 looks like:
1. April 4 - St.Petersburg, FL - street/airfield course
2. April 18 - Long Beach, CA - street course
3. ??? April 25 - Kansas City, KS - oval track
4. May 23 - Indianapolis, IN - oval track

10. July 11 - Toronto, Canada - street course
11. July 25 - Edmonton, Canada - airfield course
12. ??? July 31 - Sparta, KY - oval track (Sat nite race)
13. ??? August 8 - Elkhart Lake, WI - road course
14. August 22 - Sonoma, CA - road course
15. August 28 - Joliet, IL - oval track (Sat nite race)
16. September 5 - Belle Isle, MI - road course
17. ??? September 19 - Lexington, OH - road course
18. ??? September 26 - Loudon, NH - oval track
19. October 16 - Motegi, Japan - oval track (Sat race)
20. ??? October 24 - Surfers Paradise, Australia - street course
21. ??? November 7 - Homestead, FL - oval track
^ Ofcourse, some dates are subject to change...
===================================
BTW, the only venues (besides Indy, ofcourse) that are contracted for 2010 are: St.Pete, Long Beach, Edmonton, Toronto, Sonoma, and Chicago ?!
And here are other venues that may be under consideration for 2010:
1. Monterey, CA - (Laguna Seca) road course
2. Mexico City, Mexico - road course
3. Las Vegas, NV - street course or road course
4. Toole, UT - (Miller) road course
5. Phoenix, AZ - oval track
6. Houston, TX - street course
7. Portland, OR - road course
8. Fontana, CA - oval track
9. Brooklyn, MI - oval track
10. St.Jovite, Canada - (Mt.Tremblant) road course
11. Birmingham, AL - (Barber) road course
12. Racife, Brazil - street course
13. Monterrey, Mexico - road course
14. Long Pond, PA - (Pocono) oval track
...the saga shall continue...

Nikon named as Gold Coast sponsor => http://www.crash.net/news_view~cid~4~id~167305.htm
TG will come out as a complete asshole if he loses this race. _________________

Infineon Raceway extend contract => http://www.crash.net/news_view~cid~4~id~167346.htm
So Laguna Seca now has three more years to come up with improvements if they want an ICS race. _________________

According to Robin Miller in 2010 we won't see: Richmond, Kentucky, nor Kansas !!!
We will see Cleveland and Loudon added, and maybe Surfers, and maybe Road America. _________________

^ That is a proper attitude, but since RM is right about 50% of the time = do the math and don't cry that ovals are getting replaced by twisty ones... ?! _________________

Hey I'm on the bandwagon that I want to see RA, Cleveland, Portland, Surfer's, etc on the schedule.
I'm just saying that just like how Homestead didn't actually get dropped, I'm going to wait and see on Kansas and Kentucky. RM's schedule predictions have been wacky at best, ie Mexican oval racing? |
