A NEW SERIES FOR THE OLD CHAMP CAR MACHINES ?

A published news triggered a series of comments on various forums across North America recently. It appears that the old Champ cars may return in action next season.

Firstly, it appears that Ben Johnston may be the next owner of the Formula Atlantic series.

Johnston, who raced in a handful of Atlantic races as an amateur in 2005, has a handshake agreement to buy the Atlantic series from Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerry Forsythe.

He also revealed that he planned a new single-seater series around the Panoz DP01 and the final Reynard Champ Car.

Johnston explained that he already had 17 of the final-generation Reynard Champ Cars and was in the process of buying as many of the DP01s as possible.

These will be combined in a two-class series dubbed 'Green Prix' that he intends to get off the ground next year.

Johnston, who plans to use Cosworth engines in both types of car, intends to create an arrive-and-drive type schedule where he owns and prepares all the cars.

The first round is scheduled to take place next March in Savannah, Georgia.

Sounds good to me. Hope it happens. Idea Mr. Green

I'm pretty skeptical on this. The name alone is just, well silly.

Savannah Now wrote:

Savannah could land open-wheel race

by Adam Van Brimmer

Savannah is close to getting a second chance as an Indy racing stop.

The GreenPrix USA Series, a new open-wheel racing organization, plans to stage its debut race next St. Patrick's Day weekend on the Hutchinson Island road course.

GreenPrix owner Ben Johnston is working with the city, county and Georgia Ports Authority to finalize the deal.

"We're still in the due-diligence phase right now, and everybody is really excited about this," said Johnston, a media-marketing mogul based in Atlanta. "It's not in concrete yet, but we're working in that direction."

GreenPrix USA Savannah, scheduled for March 13-15, would be the first professional competition held on the Hutchinson Island track since the 1997 Dixie Crystals Grand Prix. That race was part of the Indy Lights Series, a Champ Car minor league circuit. The race was supposed to be held again in 1998 and 1999 but the local organizers went bankrupt and Savannah lost the race.

The track officially reopens to racing with next week's Hilton Head (S.C.)/Savannah Historics, a two-day vintage race car rally held in conjunction with the Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival.

Another exhibition, the American Grand Prize Centennial, is scheduled for next month. The Centennial marks the 100th anniversary of the inaugural running of what is today known as the U.S. Grand Prix. That race was staged on Savannah's streets in 1908, 1910 and 1911.

The GreenPrix USA cars will move around the Hutchinson Island track a little faster than their forbearers of a century ago. The series will utilize the cars built for the Champ Car World Series, machines scrapped when Champ Car merged with the Indy Racing League earlier this year.

Johnston has bought 23 Champ Car machines - including a few off of eBay - and has an agreement with Panoz Auto Development to use its Champ Car equipment. Panoz, a company based in North Georgia, was the series' chassis supplier the previous two years.

Johnston will own all the cars and mandate all use the same parts and equipment, much like the popular IROC Series that pitted stock-car and open-wheel drivers against each other in identical vehicles. That will minimize costs for the teams and ensure equal competition on the race track.

"One of the problems with racing today is it's so expensive," Johnston said. "There's a competition on the track and competition in the wallet. I want to take the wallet out of equation. I feel it's killing racing today. I want to make sure it comes down to the skills of the drivers."

Natural tie-in

The other unique facet of the GreenPrix Series is Johnston's focus on the environment - hence the word green in GreenPrix.

Vehicles will run on eco-friendly fuel with engines that regulate emissions. Johnston even has plans for a "go green" trade show to be held in conjunction with the race at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center next door to the track.

Tying a GreenPrix race to Savannah's St. Patrick's Day celebration seemed logical, Johnston said. He called St. Patrick's Day the "greenest" day of the year. And with the holiday falling on a Monday in 2009, having the race precede the parade and River Street festival should be good for local businesses, said Mark Spadoni, general manager of the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort and the special events chair for the Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Johnston and Savannah officials hope to formalize the race plans in the next month. They've been talking for over a year now and will closely examine next week's Hilton Head/Savannah Historics to gauge necessary track improvements and other logistical issues.

Bill Hubbard, president of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce, said avoiding the pitfalls of the 1997 race will be an important consideration this time.

"I think it is extremely important that (the historic) races go well to overturn what happened in the past," he said. "I know it was fun and exciting and all that, but we had vendors who didn't get paid. There will be great care taken to make sure those who participate next week and in the future will not have the bad experiences of those in the past."

An in-depth look at the plight of the Hutchinson Island road course and coverage of the first racing to be held on it in 12 years, the Hilton Head/Savannah Historics.

About GreenPrix USA Atlantic Series - Who is behind the series?

Ben Johnston, an Atlanta businessman, has purchased 23 cars used by the now-defunct Champ Car World Series and has an agreement with Panoz Auto Development, supplier of the Champ Car chassis the last two years, to use their vehicles for his new racing series. Johnston hopes to stage 10-12 races in 2009.

What is "green" about the GreenPrix?

GreenPrix USA wants to provide a racing platform for environmentally friendly auto performance initiatives. Vehicles will run on eco-friendly fuel with engines that regulate emissions, which will lead to reduction of energy and petroleum displacement.

When is the series launching?

The GreenPrix USA Web site went public Friday morning at www.greenprixusa.com. Johnston recently purchased North America's premier open-wheel feeder circuit, the Formula Atlantic Series, from the two men who owned the Champ Car World Series. The GreenPrix USA Series' debut race is scheduled for March 15 at the Hutchinson Island road course.

Where is the Hutchinson Island road course?

The two-mile loop road known as Grand Prize of America Avenue was built in the mid-1990s on the eastern end of Hutchinson Island. The track hosted an Indy Lights Series race, the Dixie Crystals Grand Prix, in 1997. Helio Castroneves won that event and went on to twice win the Indianapolis 500.

Why did the series choose Savannah?

Aside from the obvious "green" tie-in with the city's St. Patrick's Day celebration, GreenPrix USA chose Savannah because it is looking for new markets. Savannah has an underutilized facility, the Hutchinson Island course, that sits next to a large resort hotel, the Westin Savannah Harbor, and the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. Plus, many open-wheel teams are familiar with the area because they test at Roebling Road in Bloomingdale.

^ All it takes is a few dollars and a dream. And a guy with no clue has bought Atlantics and now running the "Green Prix" series. Congrats to a real CC fan !!! Idea Mr. Green
