Road America eyeing open wheel return
Amidst all the positives of this year's merger between the IRL and Champ Car, many race fans are disgruntled by the loss of a couple of North America's finest race tracks on the open wheel map. Road courses like Portland and Cleveland are among the most popular tracks to have been dropped after the merger, but usually the first name on most fans' list is that of Road America. The famous 4-mile track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin has been a set piece of the CART/Champ Car calendar for many years and now finds itself on the outside looking in. UpdateF1 takes a look at the track's situation.
Road America's bond with U.S. open wheels quickly becomes apparent when talking to the track's representatives. Elkhart Lake has been hosting a race from 1982 until 2007, being the theatre of 26 Champ Car grand prix, and the track's organisation is keen on bringing the newly merged series back to popular venue.
Communication manager Julie Sebranek: "Road America has been holding world-class road racing events for over 53 years.
Open-wheel racing has always been a part of our history and we're a natural fit for the IndyCar Series, its drivers and its fans. We definitely have a long-term intention to bring the IRL back to Elkhart Lake."
Despite the interest in the IRL, the Wisconsin market may be a difficult one. At present, a major part of the calendar is centred around the Midwest, including a successful event at Milwaukee, WI, and many people wonder whether another race in the region would be a good idea. Even if it's Elkhart Lake's legend.
Sebranek: "We are concerned about market saturation. The vicinity of races like Milwaukee and many other Midwest races could hurt a potential IndyCar Series race at our venue."
Even though the lack of major open wheels series leaves a big hole in its calendar, Road America is positive about its future.
"Road America continually upgrades its facility with racing conditions and the fan experience in mind", says Sebranek. She adds: "We are very proud that we've grown over the years while maintaining our original track configuration. We also pursue a variety of motorsports series that keep our motorcycle fans, sports car fans, and open-wheel fans engaged in road racing.
"From the looks of it, a return on the IndyCar calender doesn't seem to be a prospect for tomorrow.
However, the schedule is expected to change in some areas for 2010 and beyond, which may open up a slot for the track. Whatever the outcome, Road America remains one of North America's most popular road courses, a status it will rightfully maintain. |
Hopefully cooler heads will pervail. _________________

God willing the Crapwagons will NEVER desecrate the hallowed grounds of Road America. But if they do I hope it's an ALMS double header. So i can watch the ALMS. And then bash and make fun of the EARL the entire weekend in the pits and around the track. I would then self combust for having attended an EARL race. Even though it was the ALMS that got me there.
DIE EARL DIE. And then no one has to worry about EARL "racing" at RA. There's so much other great racing at RA, who needs the EARL anyway.
And nice try in the article saying too many midwest races too close, etc. BULLSHIT! CART/Champ Car did it for decades and the fans came. CART/Champ Car raced at Road America, Milwaukee, Detroit, Michigan, Chicago. All in the same basic vicinity. No one would come now becasue OW has been ruined. And it'[s not worth driving across the street for the EARL. _________________

Latest is - according to Wisconsin and Indiana "reporters" - that Road America is on the bottom of TG's list for 2010. _________________

Elkhart still has hopes for IRL
by Dave Lubach
ELKHART LAKE — George Bruggenthies isn't giving up hope of the Indy Racing League coming to Road America in the future.
The track's president and general manager remains hopeful that America's largest open-wheel racing circuit will one day return to the area.
"The conditions would have to be right," Bruggenthies said Saturday at the SCCA's June Sprints. "It would have to fit in the schedule and work financially. Right now, there's a market saturation."
Road America has been without an IndyCar event since Champ Car and the IRL merged before the 2008 season. Champ Car last ran here in 2007 and had a more than a 20-year relationship with the track.
The IRL's schedule includes races in Detroit, Milwaukee, Iowa and Chicago, so placing another venue in the Midwest could be tough. Still, Bruggenthies leaves the door open.
"We maintain communication with all the groups," Bruggenthies said. "We want them to be here and hope it will work out." |

IRL wants Milwaukee race... and state help => http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/99245049.html
So the IRL are saying: Forget the one mil you owe us, but give us 400K and we'll come to play.
Doesn't make much sense. Why go after an oval when everybody wants RA. Very stupid choice if you asked me. _________________

IndyCar's Bernard says multiple promoters interested in Milw Mile, could replace Chicagoland
By Chris Jenkins
JOLIET, Ill. - One of the country's most historic auto racing tracks might be making a comeback, as IndyCar officials are talking to potential promoters about getting the Milwaukee Mile back on the schedule.
Milwaukee could replace Chicagoland Speedway as an IndyCar venue, although it remains unclear whether a deal can be put together for next season — and, if so, when the reconstituted race would be held.
Speaking to reporters before Saturday night's race at Chicagoland, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said "several" promoters are interested in bringing the series back to Milwaukee.
"I want that event bad," Bernard said.
The track withdrew from hosting major racing events this year after previous track promoters ran into financial problems and the Wisconsin State Fair Park board of directors could not find a suitable replacement.
The Mile began hosting auto racing events in 1903, and has held IndyCar and the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck series in recent years. It is most closely linked to Indy-style racing, traditionally hosting a race the weekend after the Indianapolis 500.
"I think that we have a tremendous fan base that feels like we left them behind, and I think that this is a step forward to make sure tradition stays a part of IndyCar," Bernard said.
At this point, Bernard doesn't seem to be counting on any financial help from the state of Wisconsin.
"The state would like to help us," Bernard said. "The state's in a pickle in their own mind. I never want to be a parasite to any state. I don't think that's fair to the state, (and) I don't think it looks good upon IndyCar. But it has to be viable. So right now, we're trying to figure out how we make this event viable with what we have to work with."
Bernard also has held meetings with representatives from track ownership group International Speedway Corp. about IndyCar's future at Chicagoland, but he didn't sound optimistic on Saturday.
"ISC has their primary objectives and IndyCar has their primary objectives, and I'm not sure if we're all on the same page right now," Bernard said. "But we still have a great relationship with ISC going forward, and we're still trying to figure out what that would be."
Chicagoland is moving its NASCAR Sprint Cup series race to September to kick off the season-ending championship Chase next year, making it unlikely that the track would host another major event in late August.
And given the proximity of the markets, Bernard isn't sure the IndyCar series needs to be in the Chicago area and Milwaukee.
"It would most likely be Chicago or Milwaukee possibly," Bernard said. "I mean, I don't know if we need both."
The full 2011 IndyCar schedule could be announced in the next few weeks. |
