Patrick open to NASCAR future

By Matt Beer

Danica Patrick has admitted that NASCAR could be an attractive opportunity for her next season when her current IndyCar contract with Andretti Green comes to an end.

The American has been linked to a Ganassi seat if she decides to leave AGR but stay in open wheel racing, but her high profile also makes her a target for NASCAR teams.

She said the challenge of switching championships and the massive public interest in NASCAR made the Sprint Cup Series a tempting option.

"As drivers we like to challenge ourselves," said Patrick. "If we've done something well, can we do the next thing well? It's the opportunity to show your ability.

"NASCAR has so many viewers and so many partners. There are just lots of options both inside and outside the car. And it looks like fun. There are 40-odd guys that do it every year. Obviously, it's a good time. Oval racing is always fun. It's you racing against everyone else, it's very competitive.

"It's kind of like the Indy 500 every weekend. That's a lot of fun as a driver to be part of something important, and something people want to watch."

She said her main consideration was to be a frontrunner in whichever series she chose.

"I think the most important thing for me is to put myself in a situation where I can win as many races as possible and run up front and be in that competitive situation," Patrick said.

"Because at the end of the day, usually the best press comes when I'm doing things on track. That's really the most important thing for me as a driver. So that's where the ultimate focus is going to go.

"Then aside from that and after that there has to be thoughts to the brand side of the situation, and being able to make the most of myself as an athlete and as an endorser of products and gaining exposure so that in due time I'm able to explore other things outside of racing. So, all of that comes afterwards. The most important thing is kicking butt out there."

Patrick acknowledged that other drivers switching from IndyCar to NASCAR recently had struggled to make an impact, but thinks she would succeed with the right team.

"I think it's something to take notice of," she admitted. "I think what it shows is it is difficult. You do need as much help as possible. But as credit to them, they haven't been driving for the best teams in NASCAR either. So how can you really hold them accountable for not doing extremely well in the very beginning when they just don't have the resources?

"Now they're getting the hang of it. And Sam [Hornish Jr] is doing much better, and Juan [Pablo Montoya] is doing better. But, they don't drive for Hendrick or Roush or any of the top teams.

"For me the most important thing is performing and having the ability and having the resources to get there faster. When it's a top team calling, it makes it more attractive."

She hinted that she might not make any decisions until after the IndyCar season was over.

"I want to do well in the series, I want to finish as high as possible, I want to win as many races as I can, so I don't want to do anything that would take away from that being able to happen," said Patrick.

The 27-year-old insisted that at present she was only in the earliest stages of talks about 2010.

"We've definitely had many conversations about what I'm looking for and my goals, but really, it's kind of about collecting information at this point and seeing what our options are, and then we'll talk deeper after that," Patrick said.

Wonder when she'll make up her mind. Most likely when someone flashes a big check in her face. Idea Mr. Green

Danica Patrick to Hendrick ?

If Danica Patrick does jump from the Indy Racing League to NASCAR, as increasingly appears likely, the battle for her, according to sources close to the negotiations, is down to car owners Rick Hendrick, of Chevrolet, and Jack Roush, of Ford. According to these sources, Hendrick and General Motors' Chevrolet division are now suddenly the heavy favorites to sign Patrick. And the key would apparently be Hendrick's willingness to put her in a Sprint Cup ride for the full 2010 season. Roush has said he would like to see her run some NASCAR Nationwide and/or Truck events, along with six or seven Cup events, to get her accustomed to stock car racing. Hendrick reportedly is willing to go further. Patrick might take Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s spot on Hendrick's official four-team Cup roster, with Earnhardt moving to an expanded JR Motorsports operation. JR Motorsports, Earnhardt's own operation, run in partnership with Hendrick, would thus be stepping up to a full Cup program; Hendrick has already been talking with Talladega winner Brad Keselowski about Keselowski's future in NASCAR, with indications he could get a Cup ride with an expanded JR Motorsports venture, with Hendrick engines and Hendrick engineering. It is not clear how far along any Patrick-IMG-Hendrick negotiations have gone, but sources tell mikemulhern.net that the Patrick-Hendrick deal is very close to being a 'done deal.'

Ofcourse Hendrick people deny it - what else would we expect. But this rumor did not come out of thin air !!! Idea Mr. Green

DANICA PATRICK TOURS STEWART-HAAS SHOP, FUELLING RUMOURS

Rumours that Danica Patrick is planning a move to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series are bound to gain steam following her latest sightseeing tour.

Fresh off her sixth-place finish in Toronto, Patrick visited the race shop of Stewart-Haas Racing on Monday afternoon, according to FOXSports.com.

Stewart, who took over the NASCAR team last year, was not present at the Concord, N.C. shop but Patrick was able to meet with teammate Ryan Newman, crew chief Tony Gibson and general manager Bobby Hutchens.

Patrick is in the final year of her contract with Andretti-Green Racing. She has already indicated that she will keep her options open when it comes to her racing future and that includes NASCAR.

In 74 IndyCar starts, Patrick has just one win and three pole starts, but some believe she could be a financial windfall for the stock car series, which has been hit hard by the auto industry collapse this year.

Stewart-Haas plays down Patrick visit

By Diego Mejia

Stewart Haas Racing officials confirmed that IndyCar star Danica Patrick visited the team's workshop this week but played down suggestions linking her with the outfit in the future.

Patrick was spotted at the SHR headquarters in Kannapolis, North Carolina on Monday, where she was given a tour of the facilities and introduced to several team members according to the team.

The squad's owner and driver Tony Stewart was not in attendance on her visit because he was at Atlanta Motor Speedway completing a two-day tyres test for Goodyear.

"Danica Patrick was in the area and did visit Stewart-Haas Racing, said team spokesman Mike Arning. "While Tony Stewart was not at the shop - he was at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the first of a two-day Goodyear tyre test - he has known Danica for some time and has always been a supporter of her racing career.

"Danica has had a standing invitation to visit Stewart-Haas Racing since Tony announced his intentions to become a driver/owner in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series a year ago. We simply facilitated a tour of the facility and introduced her to a handful of people who were at Stewart-Haas Racing on Monday."

IndyCar's most popular driver has never hidden her interest in NASCAR. Her current contract with Andretti-Green Racing expires at the end of the year and a move to America's biggest racing series is believed to be among her options for 2010, something she openly admitted last May.

Two weeks ago at Daytona, Stewart praised Patrick's abilities but said that it's hard to predict how successful she would be in NASCAR if she ever decided to make the switch from open-wheel racing.

The two-time Sprint Cup champion has been the only driver ever to win NASCAR and IndyCar titles, claiming the IRL championship in 1997 before switching full-time to the Sprint Cup in 1998, where he got his first crown three years later.

"Obviously she's gotten where she is because she has a ton of talent," said Stewart. "You don't back into winning races and getting to the upper levels of racing by not having talent.

"Nobody knows for sure what level of talent she's got as far as a stock car until she actually just gets in one. If she's serious about it, I don't know if she needs to get in a Late Model first and run some laps and then try to get back to a radial-tyred car. Only time will tell. If she's really serious, it's kind of a crossroad for her.

"I know it's been a topic of discussion but if it's something she really wants to do, she has to be committed to it."

Well, the Little Princess is looking around for sure, but most likely she still will wind up with Ganassi next year - so the major concensus is. Confused Mr. Green

I continue to believe she's playing AGR like TK did last year. I also think AGR isn't going to budge this year, learning their lesson after TK duped them. Then again, they might be THAT stupid.

I think she'll end up with Ganassi or AGR. She'd be an also-ran in NASCAR a la Sam "who?" Hornish.

She can't win on OW! So go to a form of racing you have ZERO experience in when you haven't proven yourself from where you are coming from???????????????

People can make fun of NASCAR all they want. But very few newbie outsiders come in and are successful. Especially the OW types. Yes, the sprint car kids go to ASA, Nationwide, Trucks, to Cup, etc. But she drove a few sprint cars eons ago didn't she? A few go-karts, a few formula races and now years in the EARL. With 1 questionable win. Now she wants to trot around the NASCAR pits shopping like she's a 4 time Champion or something. Man, talk about bullshit opportunism. Ooohhhh it's so unfair in racing when it comes to woman blah blah.... Save it! Prove yourself first then get all cocky. Many other woman in racing are far more successful. But she garners all the attention cause she's not fugly to most. Such bullshit! All that matters is on the track. And she rarely does anything there to turn your head and make you go WOW!

Simona does something Danica doesn't...win! Something Danica never did in the Atlantics either. But other than on a racing website do you hear about Simona. But no matter where you go we can't stop hearing about Danica. She was on JImmy Kimmel last night to boot.

Stewart Lobbies For Danica In NASCAR

Will she or won't she?

Tony Stewart thinks she will — someday, anyway.

"She," of course, is Danica Patrick, the only marketable star in the IndyCar Series, part-time fashion model and a driver in her final contract season with Andretti-Green Racing.

All summer long, Patrick has flirted with a move to NASCAR, talking with Chip Ganassi, among other team owners, and visiting a number of NASCAR shops in the Charlotte area. And while it now appears she's going to sign one more contract with AGR, her pal and fellow former IndyCar racer Tony Stewart thinks she'll eventually end up in NASCAR somewhere.

"I can pretty much guarantee you at some point she's going to be over here," Stewart said Saturday morning at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

And the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion said that came straight from Patrick's mouth during a visit to Stewart-Haas Racing last week, the second time she has been to the SHR shops.

"She looked me straight in the eye and said, 'This is what I want to do. It looks like fun. It looks like a lot of work but it looks like fun,'" Stewart said of Patrick. "I don't think she has some misguided idea that it's going to be easy doing it. She wants to do it the right way."

And that right way likely will be staying in IndyCar for one more contract while getting some seat time in stock cars before making the leap full time.

For her part, Patrick has been mum about her short-term plans. In an interview last weekend on SPEED's

"Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain," she tap-danced around her future.

"Anything I ever say is picked apart and there are people that don't want me to say certain things or this-and-that," Patrick told guest host Tommy Kendall. "It only causes confusion, so I think the easiest thing for me is to really just say nothing."

Stewart, though, made it clear he thought she is asking all of the right questions with the intention of moving to NASCAR. "I think she wants to know how to make the transition more than anything and she's trying to put together her IRL deal and try to figure out how to transition that into NASCAR," Stewart said. "I think she's trying to do it the right way. She's not just cutting the cord and all of the sudden jumping in a car that she's unfamiliar with. She wants to stay successful where she's at, but in the meantime try to figure out a way to be able to drive and get some seat time in a car to where she can start learning to where when she does come out that she's got her act together."

Stewart applauded Patrick's approach. "She understands how hard everybody's worked to get to this level here and she doesn't want to be one of those people that just comes in and gets stuff handed to her," he said. "She wants to earn her way in and work her way up like everybody else."

Looks like this is a serious situation: either she will remain with AGR or go to Stewart's NASCAB team. Idea Mr. Green
