Newman/Wachs Ready To Move Up
by Marshall Pruett
For the brightest young stars in America's open-wheel scene, the future can often be uncertain, but thanks to Newman Wachs Racing owner Eddie Wachs, 2009 Atlantic Championship series winner John Edwards appears to be headed for the big leagues.
A season of Atlantics in 2007 at the age of 16, followed by a Star Mazda crown in 2008 and now an Atlantic title at 18 has Cincinnati's John Edwards on the cusp of an IndyCar berth with NWR. (Atlantic Championship/Phil Sedgwick)
After watching Edwards earn consecutive titles in Star Mazda and now Atlantics, Wachs says he's hard at work to move the 18-year-old Ohioan and the NWR team along for a greater challenge.
"There are two areas we're considering," said Wachs, "one is GP2 and I'm not as familiar with that series, but we're talking with people; that would take Edwards overseas again. The other is IndyCar."
Rather than work Edwards through another season in a prep series, Wachs is confident no further training is necessary. "We have very little interest in Indy Lights. We'll make the jump – [IRL Chief Operating Officer Brian] Barnhart has to approve it – but that's likely where we'll be going."
After a few seasons running a two-car team in Atlantics, Wachs is sitting on most of the equipment and infrastructure to transition to a single-car IndyCar program, but he says if NWR commits to the ICS, they will only do it with a guiding hand from an established outfit.
"I wouldn't try to do it without tailing onto an existing IndyCar team. When I started my team I figured, 'I'm as smart as anyone else; there's no reason I can't built and staff my own team to become a winner,' and it took four years for that to happen. It gave me even more respect for guys like Carl Haas, Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi to see just how much it takes to build and develop a sound and winning organization. We won't try to start from scratch. We may join another team if we go that way, and we may use that as something to launch [NWR] from."
It isn't a coincidence that Wachs named Carl Haas first amongst the team owners he most admires. Like Newman Wachs Racing, the Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing IndyCar outfit was co-owned by Wachs' long-time friend, legendary actor and racer, Paul Newman. Through Wachs' relationship with Newman, a strong friendship also developed with Haas, and in the absence of proper funding for NHL's second Indycar, it wouldn't take much to imagine an NWR and NHL tie-up in 2010.
Edwards, team owner Eddie Wachs, and teammate Jonathan Summerton celebrate their 1-2 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and NWR's 1-2 finish in the 2009 championship. (Atlantic Championship/Phil Sedgwick)
Despite the natural fit for the two operations, Wachs says securing the funding necessary to compete in the IndyCar Series remains the biggest hurdle. When it comes to the elevated costs associated with running an IndyCar program, he'd rather do it through outside sponsorship, but as one of the most benevolent team owners in the junior ranks, Wachs has never been afraid to reach into his own pockets to give young drivers a chance.
Markus Niemela, Edwards' original teammate this season, quickly depleted his budget after a string of expensive crashes, but continued racing on Wachs' dime until Jonathan Summerton became available. Beyond his prodigious talent and a decoratively-painted helmet, Summerton landed at NWR penniless but that too wasn't an obstacle for Wachs.
Now faced with the prospect of grooming Edwards into an IndyCar driver, Wachs is hoping his deep relationships within the nuclear energy community will allow him to take his Atlantic champion onwards and upwards.
"Our big concern is if we can keep funding it ourselves. We've been almost fully funded by the Nuclear Energy Institute and Entergy. They are interested in our plans and they could be a player, but they haven't committed at this point. We haven't put that one to bed yet."
Running Atlantics again in 2010 is considered an option if they can't secure the necessary IndyCar sponsorship, but Wachs has some misgivings about that possibility. It seems NWR's move out of Atlantics is partly tied into the series' ability to pay the $1,000,000 due to Edwards.
The scheme hatched by the entrants to contribute into a fund that would deliver the $1M prize to the series champion never materialized, leaving the series' management to try and find the staggering sum elsewhere. As Wachs confirms, Edwards' award remains unpaid.
"Our fallback is that we haven't sold our Atlantic cars yet. We haven't advised anyone on our team that we aren't going to go forward if our sponsorship plans fall through. We also haven't been paid the purses from the Atlantic Championship we were told we'd be given, so some of our move is centered around that."
Edwards put his Star Mazda prize to good use, earning a fully-sponsored Atlantic ride from Mazda. After four wins and a gritty drive to take the season finale, the Ohioan is ready to move up. (Atlantic Championship/Phil Sedgwick)
Wherever NWR and Edwards end up next year – and he enjoyed being coy about coming right out and confirming their intentions -- Wachs says he looks forward to the journey. After watching his drivers dominate the Atlantic Championship, a fresh challenge could be just the motivation the team needs.
"If we were to run GP2 it opens up a whole new avenue for us. Obviously, we'd have to be with the right team. It would certainly be new for us, and its something we haven't done before and I'm sure it would be interesting. There would be a lot to learn. If we stay in the United States, what I really want to do is launch John Edwards."
While Wachs' maintains NWR's future direction is still being evaluated, he says they have chosen to test Edwards in an IndyCar first. Barring that test turning into a complete disaster, I'm not sure how much longer GP2 will remain a viable option for the team.
Compared to the rigors of frequent international travel and remote administration of the program, the smartest place for NWR to call home would be the IndyCar Series.
Based on the speed and results Edwards has delivered while still in his teens, Eddie Wachs could be sitting on another future American IndyCar star. If all goes according to plan, the IndyCar Series could also be welcoming a new team.
"We'll need to test him – probably fairly soon, and if he can get up to speed…well, that's going to be a lot of fun." |
Hope Wachs' dream comes through.
And since the $1mil payout didn't happen it doesn't look good for Atlantics - especially when Wachs leaves. _________________

Newman Wachs Racing Issues Statement Regarding Future
On the heels of Newman Wachs Racing Team Owner, Eddie Wachs' statement made earlier this week regarding NWR's future, it has become apparent that a few things need to be clarified.
"The team has plans to move forward with John Edwards and we hope to be in IndyCar with him for the 2010 season," explained Team Manager Brian Halahan. "We hope to be able to make an announcement about the details of those plans in the near future. However, this does not directly affect our current position in the Atlantic Championship Series. I am continually in close contact with the Atlantic Championship Series and I am hopeful they will be in a position to fulfill all financial obligations, both for the viability of the Series and for the continued support the Atlantic Championship Series gives to drivers in the open-wheel ladder system. I am moving forward on the 2010 Atlantic season and in discussion with several drivers. I hope to be testing by mid-November."
[An interview with the 2009 Atlantic champion John Edwards will be posted on eFormulaCarNews.com in the coming days.] |
Something doesn't add up here.
Eddie Wachs had said that he hardly had enough funds to run two cars in Atlantics and now he hopes to run Edwards in IndyCar but needs MORE funds to do that.
Which means: where then will funds for Atlantics team come from if they want to keep it ??
Most likely everything will get consolidated into a one car operation in IndyCar and "sayonara" to Atlantics.
But, thanks for the high degree of optimism. _________________

Series announces 2010 schedule
Racing series
2010 Atlantic Championship Schedule Features North America's Classic Racing Circuits
BROWNSBURG, Ind. (November 13, 2009) - The 37th season of the Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda will once again take North America's longest-running open-wheel driver development series to classic road racing facilities throughout North America.
"With another strong schedule for 2010, the Atlantic Championship will once again be the top open-wheel training ground in North America," said Atlantic Championship President Ben Johnston. "We've got a great mix of facilities lined up for next year. We are again grateful to the American Le Mans Series for sharing their stage with us for a majority of our weekends in 2010, as well as to all of our terrific promoters for welcoming us back to their facilities."
As it did in 2009, the 2010 Atlantic season will get underway at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla. as part of the festivities for the prestigious Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring Presented by Fresh From Florida for the American Le Mans Series. The 2010 Atlantic season-opener is slated for Friday, March 19.
After hosting the Atlantic season finale in 2009, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is scheduled to host Round 2 of the 2010 championship on Saturday, May 22, once again alongside the American Le Mans Series. It will be the 31st Atlantic Championship race at the venerable road circuit in Monterey, Calif.
One weekend later, the Atlantic Championship will make its first of two 2010 appearances at Connecticut's Lime Rock Park as part of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series festivities on Memorial Day weekend. Round 3 is scheduled for Saturday, May 29. The Lime Rock event will also be the first of two consecutive races that Atlantic will share Grand-Am, as Round 4 of the championship takes place at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday, June 20.
On the following weekend, the Atlantic series makes its way back to the East for its first doubleheader of the year at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The first race of the weekend and Round 5 of the season is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, with the second half of the doubleheader set for Sunday, June 27.
The Atlantic Championship makes its third visit to Utah's state-of-the-art Miller Motorsports Park on the weekend of Saturday, July 10 alongside the American Le Mans Series. Fourteen days later, the series swings back into action once again at Lime Rock, this time as part of the annual American Le Mans Series event.
It will be another quick turnaround for Atlantic as the series conducts its second and final doubleheader of the season with a pair of races at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Ill. The first race of the Autobahn weekend is set for Saturday, July 31 with Race #2 of the weekend on Sunday, August 1.
The 2010 season also sees the return of the Atlantic Championship to the streets of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada as part of the 41st running of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres on Sunday, August 15 which will be the penultimate round of the championship. The season will draw to a close at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. for the second time in three years as part of the American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans activities. The season finale is slated for Friday, October 1.
Negotiations are still in progress for a potential 13th event on the 2010 schedule and details on that event will be announced should an agreement be reached.
Plans for series-sanctioned open test sessions are still being finalized and will be announced in the near future. Series officials are also working diligently on television coverage for the 2010 season, and those plans will also be announced as soon as they are finalized.
The Atlantic Championship heads into its 37th year of competition in 2010 and is noted for its long history of graduating its drivers into the top levels of motorsport throughout the world. Graduates include past and present IndyCar drivers such as Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser, Danica Patrick, Dan Wheldon, Graham Rahal, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Raphael Matos, Formula One legends and champions such as Gilles Villeneuve, Jacques Villeneuve and Keke Rosberg, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Sam Hornish Jr. and A.J. Allmendinger and sports car stars like Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney, Michael Valiante, Luis Diaz, Joey Hand and Simon Pagenaud.
Atlantic Championship graduates have won races and championships at the highest levels of motorsport, including Formula 1, IndyCar and Champ Car, and sports cars. In 2009, Atlantic graduates were top competitors in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, the American Le Mans Series, the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and even the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series among many others. 15-Year-Old To Drive For Jensen
With the 23rd annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show as the backdrop, Zach Veach and Jensen MotorSport announced that Veach will compete in the 2010 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda. The 15-year-old driver will be the youngest in the 37-year history of the series.
Zach Veach will be racing throughout North America for veteran Atlantic outfit Jensen MotorSport while most kids his age are stuck playing stick-and-ball sports. (Atlantic Championship)
Veach formed a two-year partnership of his ADS/Secur-IT-Vault-backed entry with the long-time Atlantic team owned by Canadian Eric Jensen. The team contended for top-three results throughout the 2009 season and Jensen, who also made three starts in the cockpit, earned the prestigious Team Owner of the Year Award at the season-ending awards banquet.
"I've indeed been lucky and often privileged to coach upcoming drivers who strive to become tomorrow's open-wheel stars," said Jensen. "Every so often, an individual comes along that truly makes you stand up and take notice, with both the raw, God-given talent and desire that simply cannot be taught. From what I've already seen in several private tests at both Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Nevada, Zach might very well be one of America's great next generation drivers."
Veach has been successful at various levels of karting and participated in an aggressive Formula BMW Americas testing program with an eye toward competing in that series before it was discontinued in August. The youngster then switched his attention to Atlantic competition and has familiarized himself with the Mazda-Cosworth-powered, Cooper Tire-shod Swift 016.a through several days of testing.
"I'm obviously excited about the opportunity to launch my professional racing career with one of the great team owners and instructors in Eric Jensen," said Veach. "When my father (Roger Veach) and I studied his past accomplishments and the respect he has within motor racing, we agreed that Eric was more than a logical consideration. He was absolutely the right choice. Since the age of five, I've dreamed of racing on the great race circuits of the United States – and ultimately winning the Indianapolis 500. With our newly formed team with Eric, this incredible journey is about to begin."
Veach will make his Atlantic Championship debut on March 19, 2010 at the historic Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla. |
Don't know how young is too young, but we must assume that Eric Jensen knows what he's doing. _________________

Star Mazda Champion Adam Christodoulou Completes Successful First Atlantic Test with Team Stargate Worlds at Buttonwillow
BUTTONWILLOW, Calif. (December 18, 2009) - As the holidays rapidly approach and 2009 draws to a close, 2009 Star Mazda champion Adam Christodoulou got his first taste of the Mazda-Cosworth-powered Swift 016.a utilized in the Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda in a two-day test with Team Stargate Worlds at Buttonwillow Raceway on Thursday and Friday.
The 20-year-old British driver logged nearly 400 miles over the two days in cool weather conditions aboard the same No. 78 machine that Simona De Silvestro piloted to four victories and third in points in the 2009 Atlantic Championship. The team, which is based at Buttonwillow, reported that Christodoulou managed to work up to speed quickly and rarely put a wheel wrong over the two days.
"I was pleased," said engineer Burke Harrison. "He was very consistent and obviously has a lot of raw talent. The conditions here weren't great. There was very little off-track drama at all and the feedback was good. We made progress on the balance of the car, especially the second day. I thought it was a very good test. That's the way I judge someone. We were trying stuff, we weren't just driving around, putting new tires on and looking for a lap. We worked the day like you would a good test. He never got tired, the times were consistent, his feedback was good, he went out and got after it. All in all, it was a positive test."
After spending the early portion of his career in Europe, Christodoulou made the move to the U.S. and the Star Mazda championship in 2009, claiming the title with three victories and two pole positions from 13 starts. He won the championship over Peter Dempsey in dramatic fashion in the final race of the season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. As part of his prize for winning the Star Mazda title, Christodoulou receives a free ride in the 2010 Atlantic Championship - the top rung of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder - courtesy of Mazda.
"It's been really good," Christodoulou said. "We never ran into and trouble and ended up just a fraction off Simona's time around here, so I think for my second day in the car, it's gone extremely well. The team did an awesome job. We didn't have any problems on their part. I had one minor detour off the track, but apart from that, everything else ran smoothly. We've had two days of flat-out testing pretty much. It's been quite cold, but it's been some good testing and it's been an enjoyable first experience in the Atlantic car. I've really enjoyed it."
After a break for the holidays, both Team Stargate Worlds and Christodoulou expect to hit the Atlantic testing trail hard early in the New Year. Both expect to participate in series-sanctioned testing at Sebring International Raceway on the weekend of January 22-24, 2010. |
Looks like they've found a replacement for "Swiss Miss". _________________
