Tony George Resigns From IMS

Tony George has left the buildings.

That would be the one on West 16th Street known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the one in Terre Haute known as Hulman & Company.

Tony George. (LAT)

In a story first reported by SPEEDtv.com shortly before it became official on Tuesday afternoon, George has resigned his seats on the IMS board of directors and Hulman & Company.

This comes eight months after George was ousted by his family as president and CEO of IMS and then declined to step in as president of the IRL, the series he started in 1996.

"Yes, of course, I am surprised by it and I didn't think Tony could walk away from it …. it's unfortunate for everybody," replied Jeff Belskus, the longtime IMS chief financial officer who assumed Tony's duties of IMS president and CEO last June, when asked about TG's latest move.

"There are a lot of hurt feelings on both sides."

George, who was paid for being on both boards, is currently out of the country and couldn't be reached for comment but his mother, Mari Hulman George, issued a statement on her son's decision.

"As members of his family, we are sorry to see Tony leave," said Mari Hulman George, who is also IMS chairman of the board. "We are grateful for his service to our company as a board member and of course for formerly serving as CEO and president of our companies. I speak for our whole family in wishing him well.

"All of us had hoped that Tony would continue to serve on the board and we made it clear to him. We are disappointed with his decision to step down despite our wishes."

The 50-year-old grandson of IMS savior Anton Hulman has been at odds with his three sisters (Kathi, Nancy and Josie) for several years over the amount of money that was spent -- starting and keeping the IRL afloat.

It finally came to a head last May, when George was voted out of power by the six-member board, which also includes his mother and longtime family attorney Jack Snyder. The board vacancy will be addressed at a later date, according to the IMS release.

"Our company is healthy and weathering the economic recession well," said Mari Hulman George. "Jeff Belskus (president and CEO of IMS) and Curt Brighton (president & CEO of Hulman & Company) are both doing excellent jobs in guiding our companies through this difficult time. Many hard decisions have been made and now our companies are well positioned for the future."

Both IMS and IndyCar have laid off several employees since late in 2009 and more are expected.

George seemed content to run his one-car Vision Racing team with step-son Ed Carpenter and has been supportive of the proposed Delta Wing project (a new Indy car for 2012 owned by several IndyCar owners).

But, without longtime sponsor John Menard on board for 2010, George is scrambling to keep Carpenter on the track. Recently, in a team meeting, he reportedly told his crew that he hadn't given up and was searching for sponsorship but it was possible the season might only include Indy and a couple of ovals.

George also told his crew that if they were approached with a good, full-time offer, they might want to take it.

I am truly hoping that this is a sign of the final demise of what is left of IRL/Indycar/CART/Champcar. There is really nothing left to root for, watch or even hope for.

The final burning to the ground of this series is the only way to let something good grow in its place.

I'm sad because there are a lot of good people who care a great deal for Indy and this style of racing, but it is far past time for a reboot.

George resigns from Indy board

Indy Racing League founder Tony George has resigned from the board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - ending his association with the family companies that he led for nearly two decades.

George had remained on the board after being ousted as boss of the IndyCar Series last summer following disagreements over the amount IMS was spending on the championship. But with IMS announcing his departure today, George's only remaining link with IndyCar is as head of his Vision Racing team, which is yet to finalise its 2010 programme as it hunts for sponsorship.

Mari Hulman George - the chairman of the IMS board and George's mother - said she was disappointed that her son had chosen to cut his ties with the company.

"As members of his family, we are sorry to see Tony leave," said George. "We are grateful for his service to our company as a board member and of course for formerly serving as CEO and president of our companies. I speak for our whole family in wishing him well.

"All of us had hoped that Tony would continue to serve on the board, and we made that clear to him. We are disappointed with his decision to step down despite our wishes."

But she said she was happy with how the companies were faring under the new leadership installed following George's deposition last year.

"Our company is healthy and is weathering the economic recession well," said George. "Jeff Belskus, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Curt Brighton, president and CEO of Hulman & Company, are both doing excellent jobs in guiding our companies through this difficult time.

So the man who created schism in AOWR, back in 1994, has finally reached as deep as he could to help AOWR to die. What a piece of shit !!! Rolling Eyes Mr. Green

Ahh..OW in America died the day Champ Car died! Just one more endless example that this was ALL about power. A childish fuck kicking and stomping to get his way. He wrecks EVERYTHING in OW. Then his sisters and Mommy yank the checkbook and power away. So he walks away from everything! Unless he can have 1000% of EVERYTHING he wants NOTHING to do with anything! The need to have TOTAL power just proves that a fuck like him never ever wanted ANYTHING to do with compromise. He widdles everything down to nothing and wins the OW war. And then walks away???? Shocked

Instead of building up his "great" series, building the Speedway up for generations to come, running his team, etc.... the fuck walks away??? No one was in his way. Champ Car is dead! He had total control to do anything "successfully" until....his sisters and Mommy woke up.

Still doesn't matter if he's part of the scene or not. The EARL still has his fingerprints all over it. And even if TG was dead per se, the EARL is STILL a disgustingly inferior form of racing. EVERYTHING needs to be scrapped and started over clean with NO trail of ANYTHING to do with him present ANYWHERE!

Nothing really changes. His stooges are there, Barnhart and the gang. Horribly ungly and nasty sounding crapwagons. Lemmings and traitors abound. The Speedway can survive. Just with a CART/Champ Car like series reviving the 500.

But as of now, the fucken tool running away and hiding really changes nothing. He lost the checkbook last year already.

DIE EARL DIE!!!

Tony George resigns from Speedway, IRL board

His resignation removes George from any remaining role in Hulman & Co., Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IMS Productions and other affiliated companies.

Anton H. "Tony" George has resigned from the board of directors of Hulman & Co., including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indy Racing League, according to a statement from his mother, Mari Hulman George, the company's chairman.

"As members of his family, we are sorry to see Tony leave," said Mari Hulman George in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. "We are grateful for his service to our company as a board member and of course for formerly serving as CEO and president of our companies. I speak for our whole family in wishing him well."

His resignation removes George from any remaining role in Hulman & Co., IMS, IMS Productions and other affiliated companies.

George continues to be involved in the IRL through his ownership of Vision Racing.

"All of us had hoped that Tony would continue to serve on the board, and we made that clear to him," Hulman George's statement said. "We are disappointed with his decision to step down despite our wishes."

George was removed as CEO of the family companies on June 30. Jeff Belskus, the former IMS chief financial officer, was named his replacement and has began to overhaul business operations.

The board vacancy will be addressed at a later date, according to Hulman George. In addition to Hulman George, board members include attorney Jack Snyder and George's three sisters: Nancy George, Josie George and Kathi George-Conforti.

Hulman George said she is very pleased with the direction of the company and the progress that has been made during the last six months.

"Our company is healthy and is weathering the economic recession well," she said.

"Jeff Belskus, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Curt Brighton, president and CEO of Hulman & Co., are both doing excellent jobs in guiding our companies through this difficult time. Many hard decisions have been made, and now our companies are well positioned for the future."

The Speedway has been plagued in recent years by declining attendance at its two major events: the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Brickyard 400.

Since Belskus has taken over, more than 40 IMS and IRL employees have been terminated. Belskus also is investigating other business initiatives, including turning the Speedway into a multi-use facility, and outsourcing catering and operations at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort.

George's departure leaves myriad questions as Belskus works to put his stamp on the operation. Some racing sources say his departure shows just how deep the rift is between George and the rest of his family regarding the direction of the company.

There has even been speculation that the board could move to spin off the IRL, fold some of the events at the track, namely the Brickyard 400 or MotoGP motorcycle race, and possibly even consider selling the Speedway. Belskus has stressed several times that the IMS is not for sale and there is no consideration at this time to kill any of its events.

Among the things that rankled Tony George, motorsports sources said, was Belskus' and the board's decision to downsize May's Indy 500-related event schedule.

Another words, FTG has finally realized that his voice doesn't count anymore and like a beat-up puppy put his tail between legs and left. And even John Menard doesn't back him up anymore. Idea Mr. Green

So, who says God has no sense of humour?

In retrospect, all Tony accomplished was to imperil what he loved and wanted to save. Hubris, is that what they call it?

We likely haven't heard the end of the story. Storm clouds are gathering and they are arming for battle in Indy Car land. This could get uglier before all is said and done.

Well, we have lots of rumors and facts to suck on:

1/ TG spent over $600mil on a 15yr losing "business"... but sisters finally got wise...

2/ TG sunk over $600mil in the Madoff scam... and then sold his house in Indy...

3/ the bean-counter running the show now is looking for shortcuts in expenditures but it hardly seems that one hand will cover the other... yeah, still making money on Brick400, and a bit on MotoGP, and Izod may be chipping in $10mil, plus few other incomes (TV contract, tracks/promoters, Honda "incentives"), but all them numbers are slowly appearing smaller than they have seemed to begin with... and it didn't take Belskus too long to see it...

4/ and we still are hearing rumors of "IMS For Sale"... but who the fuck would want to pay the $1bil asking price ??? - the cow pasture IMS is built on isn't worth more than $50mil !!!... for example: the "Kentucky Derby" racetrack was sold recently for $78mil - and it cost much-much more to build it...

5/ in the meantime, team owners are doing whatever they can to show us their dislike of Barnfart (shades of CART here)... how long will this duel last ???...

6/ John Menard has finally told TG off and won't back him again... that cancells the rumor of TG/Menard buying IRL, btw... plus TG is flat broke by now and his credit is way tarnished all thanks to "The Sisters"...

So what will the near future bring ???... will we see Little Eddie race at Indy in a "Vision" car ???... and what other possible crap will we hear from TG's moronic mouth ???...

I'm not really looking forward to see what TG will do or say next - this "POS" is no longer of any value in AOWR !!!... but I know that he still has something to say (to us) - especially after doing another line of blow...

This story is far from over... no wonder Cotman walked away, btw... ...now all we can do is sit and watch how far Belskus and Barnfart will take this sinking ship for a ride... not far in my book... guess one time that TG didn't lie is when he said: "IRL will be dead by 2013 !!"... Wink Mr. Green

Did he really lose 600 million in the Madoff scam? That's hilarious if he did! But then he lost his families money. But they are as guilty as he is. It took them 15 fucken years to wise up! And the only reason they did was because the accountant came into the room and cleared his voice very loudly. And said, "Look at this!" And what they saw was a sea of red and impending doom. When they were raking it in with their businesses they sat back and allowed him to ruin all of OW. He never made a nickel off of the EARL. But they were making so much off of NASCAR and F1 and their personal businesses that they didn't care if he plunked tons down on the EARL. But now the economy is shit, the EARL has always been shit, F1 is gone and MotoGP is not the same, Brickyard 400 isn't the big draw as it was, etc. etc. etc. NOW they finally woke up when THEIR $$$$ futures were in doubt. But as for us diehard fans, the sisters or narly Mari Hulman NEVER had OW close to their hearts or top interests. They saw it the same as TG. That the EARL was no different than CART or Champ Car. And whatever TG was doing was fine with them. If it didn't come down to money they would have allowed him to continue to do whatever the fuck it is that he does. Destroying OW and continuing on with thta version of OW he calls the EARL.

I just find it terribly funny that it took 4 woman to yank the checkbook from the biggest pussy ever! But by no means are they guilt free or on my list of friends!

Robin Miller of SPEEDtv wrote:

MILLER: What’s Next For Tony George ?

by Robin Miller

The non-stop phone calls, emails and texts all had the same theme: “What does this mean for IndyCar? Is the IRL dead? Why would Tony just walk away? Are he and Kalkhoven and Forsythe going to buy IndyCar? He knows his sisters are selling the Speedway so he wants out?

Where will Tony George land once he returns from his European ski trip? (LAT)

How can he afford to quit? What’s the inside story behind this?”

Tony George resigning his seats on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hulman & Company board of directors created this latest tsunami of questions and speculation on Tuesday.

Nobody but the former IMS president/IRL founder knows the real reasons he cut the umbilical cord to his family and George is skiing in Austria with Kevin Kalkhoven, who reports they’re having a good time.

Even if he was here, TG isn’t likely to volunteer many details anyway so about all we can do is make some educated guesses.

The most pressing question is the easiest one to address:

George’s departure really has no affect on IndyCar or the Indianapolis 500 because since last May he hasn’t had any real power or influence in either the series he started or the track he inherited.

That’s not opinion, it’s a fact – all Tony had was one of six votes on the IMS board and his voice among the IndyCar owners. He couldn’t hire anybody, write a check or make any deals involving those two entities.

After being voted off the throne by his three sisters, attorney Jack Snyder and mother, Mari Hulman George, following the Indy 500, George couldn’t even get $800,000 from them to run Ryan Hunter-Reay the rest of 2009.

The bottom line is that right now IndyCar and the Speedway are likely being managed more efficiently than at any time in the past 20 years. Jeff Belskus, who as longtime chief financial officer for Hulman & Company wrote checks for TG’s teams, tracks, purses, planes and personnel, has been ordered to cut the fat and make sense of both budgets.

Since replacing George as IMS president and CEO, Belskus has tried to shore up the bottom line and a lot of people have been let go on West 16th Street the past few months – among them COO Joie Chitwood and IMS productions chief Charlie Morgan.

George said that the Speedway eats money every day but, of course, it was his IndyCar series that required a non-stop diet of cash. It’s estimated that it cost (depending on the year) $20-50 million annually to keep the IRL up and running since 1996.

The IMS board (aka Cathi George Conforti, Josie George and Nancy George) screamed long and loud about their brother’s spending habits and this new regime is more about saving and trying to regain those profitable days when people threw money at the Speedway.

Having said that, it appears the girls understand the Speedway needs IndyCar and vice versa. My sources say the IRL is owned by a Hulman & Company trust (76 percent), Mari Hulman George (20 percent) and one percent each for Tony, Kathi, Josie and Nancy.

The rumors that won’t go away (despite constant denial from Belskus) is that IMS and IRL are for sale, separately or as a package. Mari, the only person who can sell the Speedway because it’s in her name, has always said it’s not for sale because it’s for her grandkids (five of which are now working for either the IRL or IMS.)

As for selling IndyCar, after the USAC/CART and IRL/CART wars, one would imagine the Speedway wants to determine its own destiny rather than negotiating policies or being dictated to so, providing IndyCar can be maintained at a reasonable price, it doesn’t seem likely to be sold.

Trying to explain George’s decision is the toughest.

He’s no longer paid an estimated $1.2 million to be IMS king yet both board of director jobs were believed to carry a salary of some kind. His plane, helicopter and boat are gone and his house is for sale, plus he’s trying desperately to raise sponsorship to keep his Vision Racing team on the track. It would appear he needs income and owning an Indy car certainly can’t be profitable unless you’ve got a $10 million sponsor.

One of his friends, who requested anonymity, said that Tony couldn’t stand not being in charge and those board meetings pissed him off even worse.

The late Dave Cassidy, who was Tony Hulman’s righthand man and confidant for 30 years in addition to being Tony George’s godfather, surmised in the late ‘90s that if things didn’t turn out to TG’s liking, he was liable to just pick up and head for Colorado or Montana. Just walk away.

It’s impossible to predict what the future holds for the man who brought NASCAR to IMS and Indy-car racing to its knees, mangled the month of May, financed the safer walls, tore up the track to accommodate Formula One and then brokered the deal to put open wheel racing back together.

But there is one hard-to-fathom fact.

In only nine months, Tony George has gone from one of the most powerful men in all of motorsports to just another car owner trying to keep the doors open.

http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/miller-whats-next-for-tony-george/

Well, since he's skiing with his new friend who once controled Champ Car could this mean that he's giving the keys back to Kevin Kalkhoven & Gerry Forsythe? HMMMMMMMMMMMM!!
