So the IRL really doesn't have a CEO as Belskus is wearing too many hats.

Belskus ponders delegating IRL role

Quietly, the search is on for a chief executive officer for the Indy Racing League.

The Indianapolis-based series has been without such a person since Tony George resigned in June. Brian Barnhart and Terry Angstadt are the presidents of the competition and commercial divisions, respectively.

Jeff Belskus officially is CEO of the IRL, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IMS Productions and Radio Network, and that's a lot for one person.

"Jeff Belskus can play only so many roles," Belskus said Thursday.

The situation was created when Joie Chitwood resigned as IMS president and chief operating officer to join International Speedway Corp., and Charlie Morgan, the president and CEO of IMS Productions, moved to Emmis Communications.

Belskus said there "is no active search" for any of the leadership positions, but it's clear his radar is on, particularly as it relates to the IRL. Three names have surfaced as possible candidates:

Randy Bernard, CEO of Professional Bull Riders.

Mark Miles, president and CEO of Central Indiana Corporate Partnerships and chairman of the 2012 Super Bowl committee.

Zak Brown, founder and CEO of Just Marketing Inc.

Bernard, who is based in Los Angeles, recently visited Indianapolis and the Hulman-George family, in part to share strategies related to growth through Versus. Miles and Brown are based in the Indianapolis area.

Belskus said an organizational chart prepared for next week's company executive retreat in Orlando, Fla., shows opportunities to fill the vacancies.

"Filling (them) is an option, and we are considering all of our options," he said. "I'm happy with the staffs that we have and we have some very capable people, but if we need to shore up the ranks, we can.

"We've certainly lost some executive-level people over the last six months."

Dunno, maybe they were holding this position in case TG changed his mind? Anyway, they've offered it to Bernard who's worked with Versus and oversaw bull ridings rise in popularity. I guess it can't really get worse, I just wonder why anyone would take this gig who didn't need the money?

IRL hires Bernard as new CEO, replacing George

By Curt Cavin

The Indy Racing League landed a new chief executive officer Friday when Randy Bernard accepted the position vacated by Tony George.

Bernard, the founder and now former CEO of Professional Bull Riders Inc., will be confirmed next week, industry sources told The Star.
Bernard turns 43 Sunday. He has never attended an IndyCar Series race.

The resident of Colorado City, Colo., said earlier this week that his background shouldn't be a hindrance to growing the IRL.

"I didn't know anything about bull-riding before we started," he said. "But 20 riders gave $1,000 each -- three had to borrow the money -- and we made it go.

"The first day we had a 15-by-15 office, a folding chair, a table and I was the only employee. We learned everything from the ground up."

PBR has grown into an international sport, distributing $9 million in prize money in 2009.

Bernard became familiar with IRL officials because PBR used IMS Promotions for some of its television work. Another tie is Versus, which PBR has used as its springboard to success.

"There are a lot of similarities between the two groups," Bernard said. "The IRL is already (going). All it needs is some direction and some dreams."

So we have a young cowboy for a CEO now. Rolling Eyes Mr. Green

...He has never attended an IndyCar Series race...

TOO FUNNY!!!!! A bull rider taking over a series he's never even seen one race of Laughing Just look at how many actual people with racing backgrounds CART chewed up through the years. Because of the volatile nature of OW and the split, etc. CART/CC may be gone. But OW is more volatile then ever. And the EARL has never been successful and never will be. Buthtey just keep trotting these "experts" in. The tools get paid at least I assume. But they never accomplish anything. And I'm fine with that and oh it's funny! Why didn't they hire Gene Simmons to run it all? Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

For example look at the vast and successful background Pook had in racing and promotion, etc. Everyone remembers what a horrible zcar of CART he was? I DO! Remember how out of touch he was? I DO! Good luck Cowboy. Cause I really don't mean it Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes Laughing Wink

Well, I guess I can say that I have seen it all now, the founder of the PBR in charge of the irl.

Nope, still not enough for me to care about the series.

I think he'll surprise us all with new IRL innovations...

During yellows a clown will jump from the safety car trying to slow down traffic as they approach the accident scene.

Tire barricades are replaced with barrels.

Piles of horse shit will be splattered down the back stretch to create a new element that will challenge drivers.

MILLER: 33 For Bronco

by Robin Miller

With Randy Bernard's hiring, most of the ties to the original IRL management have been severed. The former PBRA leader has a daunting task in front of him, and willingly accepted the challenge. (IndyCar.com)

Instead of a house warming gift or treating him to lunch at the Mug 'N Bun, I've decided the best way to welcome new IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard to Indianapolis is to give him 33 suggestions/warnings/facts about his new job.

1. A couple times in your first press conference you used the term "vision" and, frankly, that word didn't work real well for the last guy in your position so I think I'd avoid it if possible.

2. When you start meeting the car owners try to remember that lying comes naturally to many of them.

3. A.J. Foyt is the closest thing to a bronco buster in the IndyCar paddock and he calls everybody "cowboy" but I'm not sure he can saddle a horse.

4. Don't be alarmed by all the empty seats at the oval tracks, it's just tradition.

5. It's a month before the season opener and your best young American driver (Graham Rahal) doesn't have a ride so you might want to make finding him a sponsor a priority.

6. Terry Angstadt performed a minor miracle and got IZOD as your title sponsor for big bucks so I'd make sure to save him a good parking space.

7. If some guy named Reif calls you looking for a job, hang up.

8. If you replace the I Am Indy ballad with Rawhide, no one will mind.

9. You aren't the first CEO that didn't know anything about auto racing, just the latest.

10. Don't be alarmed by the lack of American drivers, it's just tradition.

11. Besides Danica, Paul Tracy is the most popular and recognizable driver in your series but he's only got a ride for Indy and the two Canadian races so you won't meet him until May.

12. Speaking of May, don't be alarmed by the lack of attendance at practice and qualifying, it's just tradition.

13. But the race day crowd made a nice comeback last year and it will take your breath away.

14. You should ask around about Tony Cotman, he's now a consultant and officiates your Indy Lights races but everybody knows he should be running the racing side.

15. Try to avoid using IRL in interviews, it conjures up too many bad memories.

If you count the security guards and an occasional raccoon, the Homestead finale could have as many as 12,002 fans in the stands, Bronco. We suspect you get more people at a PBRA event, right? (LAT)

16. Since you have a good relationship with VERSUS, might be a good idea to get them to make peace with DIRECTV before March 14.

17. Regardless of what Brian Barnhart says, the Indy 500 should NEVER start with the front row single file by Turn 1. It's like bull riding with a Shetland pony.

18. You might want to condense future schedules because right now you're all but invisible come football season.

19. Don't feel bad if you aren't exactly sure what Helio Castroneves is saying, nobody else has a clue either.

20. I'd try to stay on the good side of the Hulman-George girls.

21. Don't get mad that Danica is driving stock cars, embrace it. She's always identified as an IndyCar driver and she's generated more press in the off-season than you can buy.

22. Get some footage of the 2007 Champ Car season and notice how clean and racy those standing starts were on street circuits and road courses. That was Cotman's idea and you need to adopt it.

23. Don't be alarmed that Barnhart is quoted more than any drivers by the local newspaper, it's just tradition.

24. It's OK to have your season finale in a warm climate, just don't make it Homestead. It's embarassing to clinch a championship in front of 12,000 people.

25. Don't be alarmed that the same two teams win every race, it's just tradition.

26. You should be at the Chicago Auto Show next Wednesday to see the Delta Wing project and listen to Ben Bowlby's proposal because it may be your future.

27. Try not to stare at Dan Wheldon's teeth.

28. You need cheaper cars and engines, larger purses, smaller budgets and new rules for more participation.

29. Embrace Parnelli, A.J., Mario, Gordy, J.R. and the Unsers because your history is as valuable as anything you have.

30. Don't be alarmed at the lack of legitimate media in your press rooms, it's just tradition.

31. Start watching SPEED on Sunday nights because SPEED REPORT and WIND TUNNEL are the ONLY national TV shows that feature IndyCar on a weekly basis.

32. Its a little over a month from your season opener and you still don't have a director of public relations. Steve Shunck, supposedly one of the finalists, is a no-brainer. He's worked at CART, NASCAR, IMS, ABC and has a great relationship with all the drivers, knows television, the media and has more knowledge, passion and good ideas than anybody you'll ever meet. Do the series a favor and hire him.

33. This is a number used to determine the starting lineup at Indy. But it's only a number.

^ Some great advice there. Thanks Robin. Twisted Evil Mr. Green

LOVE Robin Miller! So funny and such a smart ass! And so dead on when he is!

My favorite: 4. Don't be alarmed by all the empty seats at the oval tracks, it's just tradition.

TG HAD to start an ALL oval series because CART was killing OW. IT hasn't worked form the get go! It may work for NASCAR. But diehard TRUE OW fans want road courses as well. It was the true mix of it all that made CART the greatest and most challenging and true championship in the world. Could care less what the world thinks but F1 couldn't hold a candle to CART. Because they only race on road courses.

Bring it on cowboy! DIE EARL DIE! Do your best at killing EARL for us you fool! Never been to a race and they hire him Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
